Granny Stripes Crochet Baby Bonnet

Looking for a quick project to use your scrap yarns for? This granny stripe bonnet is the answer. It works up quick and makes a great project for charity or a baby shower or newborn gift. The written pdf pattern contains two sizing options. The 0-6 size is written below.

Materials:

5.0 mm crochet hook

Dk weight yarn – (scrap yarns in 4 or 5 colours)

Colour A = purple

Colour B = yellow

Colour C = pink

Colour 4 = green

Stitch markers (Optional)

Yarn needle

Beginner

Gauge :

16 stitches /8 rows = 10 cm/4 inches in Dc

Stitch Guide (US Version)

Ch: Chain

Dc: Double crochet

Sc: Single Crochet

Slst: Slip stitch

Pattern note

  • Ch 2 at the beginning of a rounds doesn’t count as a stitch
  • Ch 3 at the beginning of the rows counts as a stitch
  • The bonnet is worked top down.

Pattern Instruction

With Colour A

Round 1: Make a magic ring, Ch 2, make 1 Dc into the magic ring , mark stitch,  work additional 11 Dc in the ring. Finish the round with a slst to the 1st Dc.  (12 Dc)

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 Dc in the first stitch and in each stitch across. Finish the round with a slst to the 1st Dc. (24 Dc)

Round 3: Ch 2, 2 Dc in the first stitch, *1Dc in the next two stitches  2 Dc in the next stitch * repeat till the end of round. 1 Dc in each of the last two stitches. Finish the round with a slst to the 1st Dc. (32 Dc)

Round 4: Ch 2, 2 Dc in the first stitch, *1Dc in the next three stitches  2 Dc in the next stitch * repeat till the end of round. 1 Dc in each of the last three stitches. Finish the round with a slst to the 1st Dc. (40 Dc)

Round 5: Ch 2, 2 Dc in the first stitch, *1Dc in the next four stitches  2 Dc in the next stitch * repeat till the end of round. 1 Dc in each of the last four stitches. Finish the round with a slst to the 1st Dc. (48 Dc)

We will work in rows from here on

Row 6: Make a slip knot with Colour B, Slst into the second stitch and  finish it by pooling up colour B. With colour B, Ch 3, 2 Dc into the same stitch, *skip 2 stitches, 3 Dc into the next stitch*. Finish the last Dc with a Slst of Colour C. Do not work into the last stitch.  (16 groups of 3)

Row 7: Ch 3, turn. 3 Dc into the space between the groups of 3 Dc from the previous row all the way across. End row with a Dc to the top of  Ch 3 from previous row. Finish the last Dc with a Slst of Colour D (15 groups of 3, Dc on both edges)

Row 8: Ch 3, turn. 2 Dc to the top of the last Dc from previous row (3 Dc), 3 Dc into the space between the groups of 3 Dc from the previous row all the way across. End row with 3 Dc into the space between the last group of 3 and the Ch 3 from previous row. Finish the last Dc with a Slst of Colour A (16 groups of 3)

Row 9: Ch 3, turn. 3 Dc into the space between the groups of 3 Dc from the previous row all the way across. End row with a Dc to the top of  Ch 3 from previous row. Finish the last Dc with a Slst of Colour B (15 groups of 3, Dc on both edges)

Row 10: Ch 3, turn. 2 Dc to the top of the last Dc from previous row (3 Dc), 3 Dc into the space between the groups of 3 Dc from the previous row all the way across. End row with 3 Dc into the space between the last group of 3 and the Ch 3 from previous row. Finish the last Dc with a Slst of Colour C (16 groups of 3)

Row 11: Ch 3, turn. 3 Dc into the space between the groups of 3 Dc from the previous row all the way across. End row with a Dc to the top of  Ch 3 from previous row. Finish the last Dc with a Slst of Colour D (15 groups of 3, Dc on both edges)

Row 12: Ch 3, turn. 2 Dc to the top of the last Dc from previous row (3 Dc), 3 Dc into the space between the groups of 3 Dc from the previous row all the way across. End row with 3 Dc into the space between the last group of 3 and the Ch 3 from previous row. Finish the last Dc with a Slst of Colour A (16 groups of 3)

Row 13: Ch 1, turn. Sc into each Dc from previous row (48 Sc)

Row 14: Ch 1,turn. Sc in first stitch, *skip 1, 5 Dc in the next stitch, skip 1, Sc in next stitch* repeat across. Finish the row with 5 Dc in the next stitch, Sc into the last stitch. Ch 1 and cut yarn.

STRAP

Row 1: Ch 38, join with a Slst to a side of the bonnet. Work 1 Sc through the side of each rows 14 and 13 and 2 Sc through the sides of rows 12 – 6, work 1 Sc each into the 2 skipped stitches from row 6, 2 Sc through the sides of rows 6-12, 1 Sc through the sides of row 13 and 14, Ch 39

Row 2: Slst in the second chain from hook and in each of the remaining 37 chains. Sc through the Sc from the previous row till you get to the chains. Slst in each chain across. Ch 1 and cut yarn.

Finishing

Weave in all ends

Finished bonnet
