What I love about the stripes sweater is the vertical stripes running through the center of the sweater. It is so easy to make and it’s beginner friendly as it makes use of simple crochet stitches. It looks great in all colour combinations. You can find the written pattern below.

16 stitches /13 rows= 10 cm/4 inch square in V stitches
Pattern note
- Chain 2 counts as a stitch.
- Don’t work the stripes too tight so your cardigan doesn’t come out wonky.
0-6 months
Pattern instructions
Front Panel
Ch 42
Row 1: Hdc in the third chain from the hook and in each chain across. (40Hdc)
Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Fphdc around the post of the first stitch and bphdc around the post of the next stitch. Keep alternating till the end of row. End row with bphdc. (40 stitches)
Row 3-4: Repeat row 2
Row 5: Ch 2, turn. Attach a stitch marker to the top of Ch 2, Hhdc in the second stitch and in each across. (40 stitches).
Row 6-16: repeat row 5
Stripes
Ch 8,
Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across. (7 sc), Skip a stitch Slst into the next stitch from Row 16
Row 2: Turn, do not chain, Sc in each stitch across, make 2 Sc in the last stitch. Finish the last Sc with a Slst of colour B (8 Sc)
Row 3:Ch 1, turn. 2 Sc in the first stitch, Sc in the remaining stitches from previous row. (9 sc). Skip a stitch Slst into the next stitch from Row 16
Row 4: Turn, do not chain, Sc in each stitch across, make 2 Sc in the last stitch. Finish the last Sc with a Slst of colour A(10 Sc)
Row 5:Ch 1, turn. Sc in each stitch from previous row. (10 sc). Skip a stitch Slst into the next stitch from Row 16
Row 6: Turn, do not chain, Sc in each stitch across. Finish the last Sc with a Slst of colour B (10 Sc).
Row 7:Ch 1, turn. Sc in each stitch from previous row. (10 sc). Skip a stitch Slst into the next stitch from Row 16
Row 8: Turn, do not chain, Sc in each stitch across. Finish the last Sc with a Slst of colour A (10 Sc).
Keep repeating row 5, 6,7,8 till you have 4 stitches remaining from row 16
Row 37: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each stitch from previous row. (10 sc).
Skip a stitch Slst into the next stitch from Row 16
Row 38: Turn, do not chain, Sc in each of the first 10 stitches, Sc2tog. Finish the last stitch with a Slst of colour B(9 Sc)
Row 39: Ch 1, turn. Sc2tog, Sc in each of the remaining stitches of the row. (8 sc). Skip a stitch Slst into the last stitch from Row 16
Row 40: Turn, do not chain, Sc in each of the first 8 stitches, Sc2tog. Ch 1 and cut yarn. (7 sc)
Upper Cardigan
Total stitch count after the stripes is 34, the first and last three stitches have been reduced for armhole
With the right side facing, slst with colour B to the 4th row from the stripes below,
Row 1: Ch 2, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in each stitch till you have 3 stitches left, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in the last stitch. (32 stitches)
Row 2: Ch 2, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in each stitch till you have 3 stitches left, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in the last stitch. (30 stitches)
Row 3: Ch 2, Hhdc in the next stitch and in each stitch across. (30 stitches)
Neck Separation
30÷2 =15
Row 4: Ch 2, Hhdc in next stitch and in each stitch till you have 4 stitches left out of 15. Hhdc3tog, Hhdc in the last stitch. (13 stitches)
Row 5: Ch 2, Hhdc3tog the next 3 stitches, Hhdc in each stitch across. (11 stitches)
Row 6: Ch 2, Hhdc in the next stitch and in each stitch till you have 3 stitches left, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in the last stitch. (10 stitches)
Row 7: Ch 2, Hhdc2tog the next 2 stitches, Hhdc in each stitch across. (9 stitches)
Row 8: repeat row 6 (8 stitches)
Row 9: repeat row 7 (7 stitches)
Row 10: repeat row 6 (6 stitches) Ch 1 and cut yarn.
Row 11-12: repeat row 10 without decrease (6 stitches)
Reattach yarn to the opposite side and repeat row 4 – 10 only
Back Panel
Repeat instructions for front panel up to row 4 of the upper cardigan.
For row 4-10, repeat instructions of row 3 of the upper cardigan.
On the right shoulder only
Row 11: Ch 2, turn. Hhdc2tog in the next 5 stitches (6 stitches)
Row 12 : repeat row 11
Sleeve
Ch 24,
Row 1: Hdc in the third chain from the hook and in each chain across. (22 Hdc)
Row 2:Ch 2, turn. Fphdc around the post of the first stitch and bphdc around the post of the next stitch. Keep alternating till the end of row. End row with bphdc. (22 stitches)
Row 3-4: Repeat row 2
Row 5: Ch 2, Hhdc into the same stitch, Hhdc in each stitch across, make 2 Hhdc in the last stitch (24 stitches)
Row 6-9: repeat row 5 (32 stitches)
Row 10: Ch 2, Hhdc into the next stitch and in each stitch across (32 stitches)
Row 11-16: repeat row 10
Stripes
Repeat the instructions for stripes as explained for front panel
Total stitch count after the stripes is 26, the first and last three stitches have been reduced for armhole
Upper sleeves
Row 1: Ch 2, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in each stitch till you have 3 stitches left, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in the last stitch. (24 stitches)
Row 2: Ch 2, Hhdc3tog, Hhdc in each stitch till you have 4 stitches left, Hhdc3tog, Hhdc in the last stitch. (20 stitches)
Row 3: Ch 2, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in each stitch till you have 3 stitches left, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in the last stitch. (18 stitches)
Row 4: Ch 2, Hhdc3tog, Hhdc in each stitch till you have 4 stitches left, Hhdc3tog, Hhdc in the last stitch. (14 stitches)
Row 5: Ch 2, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in each stitch till you have 3 stitches left, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in the last stitch. (12 stitches)
Row 6: Ch 2, Hhdc3tog, Hhdc in each stitch till you have 4 stitches left, Hhdc3tog, Hhdc in the last stitch. (8 stitches)
Row 7: Ch 2, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in each stitch till you have 3 stitches left, Hhdc2tog, Hhdc in the last stitch. (6 stitches)

Assembling
With the right sides facing, place the two extra row of the right shoulder of the back panel over the two extra row of the front panel and sew the sides of the two rows together
Use stitch markers to attach one of the sleeves, and sew from armhole to arm hole.
Note in the picture all the panels have their wrong sides facing up
With the right sides facing, Sew the left shoulder of the front panel to 6 stitches of the back panel
Attached the second sleeve as illustrated before
With the right side facing, sew up from the hem of the cardigan to the hem of the sleeve on both sides.
Neck Border
With right side facing you, join yarn to the two extra row at the right shoulder,
Row 1: Ch 2, Hdc in the same space and in each stitch across back to left shoulder seam, Sc 17 stitches along left front neck edge to center front, Sc 17 stitches along the right front neck edge, till the two extra rows.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Fphdc around the post of the first stitch, bphdc around the post of the next, keep alternating till you get to the two closest stitch to the centre on the right front, make Fphdc do not finish, make a bphdc into the next don’t finish it, reach to the two closest stitches to the center on the left front, make Fphdc don’t finish it, make a bphdc around the post of the next stitch, finish the phdc4tog by pulling through all 5 loops on your hook. Continue alternating Fphdc and bphdc till you get to right shoulder of the back panel
Attach a button to the two extra rows of the back panel right shoulder, button up through the space between the stitches of two extra rows of the right shoulder of the front panel.
